Accident claims Final year Geology Student's life.

Sunday 19th April, an accident happened along Ikom-Calabar High way on his way back back from getting samples for his project work.

his name is Joseph Otu, final year student of the department of Geology, Faculty of Science, University of Calabar.

the young energetic man, popularly known as fair Joe because of his light skin complexion.

he hails from Boki LGA of Cross River state, Attended Federal Government College, Ikom.

his sudden demise has thrown many into deep sadness.

this is what some of his close allies had to say about him.

''I call him fair Joe aka Joseph Otu,aka geo dancer...is sad u left us in a car accident on ur way back from project field work.
The entire final yr marine geology and geology gone miss u, STORM CRACKERS gone miss u.....R.I.P ..." BOB JACOB.

This is what another person had to say.
"
He was young and promising. We all began the academic quest together through pre-degree in the university of Calabar. He had just entered into final year. He was a good dancer. He was a nice guy. He was jovial and lively. We never saw it coming. 3 nights earlier he had slept in our house with my roommate and I and another friend of ours. We saw a movie together, we gist, he cracked jokes, we laughed. I remember telling that I didn't have the strength to laugh at much of his jokes that evening. But 3days later, I heard Joe was dead. I chose not tp believe but it didn't change the reality of things. I made calls to confirm and then it dawned on me, that there is nothing in life. It's just a complex story or whatever simple story you make out of it. Like Late Myles Munroe would say, it's not in how long you live but in how well. It dawned on me that there was a thin line between life and death and the later could just happen within a snap of a finger. Same, there's a thin line between heaven and hell, you never know when your turn will be... In all, live a life of impact, live well... Live a life with Christ for eternity is sure. Adieu Joseph Otu... we'll miss you bro." EKEMINI

Rest In Peace, Fair Joe

On InterFaculty Games in Unical

The much waited inter faculty games will commence without the usual euphoria and awashed expectations. But certainly this is what UNICAL students deserve,an Olympic like Commonwealth styled events.Table tennis,Snooker,Basketball, and Athletics for male and female categories.Sadly, the director of Sports Comrade Nsisong Brendan had to omit Football,Volleyball and Scrabble as a result of the meagre resources at his disposal. In a chat with popular UNICAL sports administrator Pastor Alberto,he regretted the omission of those games in which he presented the initial framework to me.if Nsisong and the LOC chairman and emerging sports icon Kingsley NwokoloCSO can successfully organise this games,it will go a long way in setting a standard for subsequent editions in the coming years.A kind we have craved for since Julius Iyoma and Ruth Essien were at the helm. But we must question the deplorable state of sporting facilities inspite of over 15 million has realized from the 1000 naira paid by students into the school sports coffers.

UNICAL SUG EXECUTIVES DIALOUGE WITH SCHOOL MANAGEMENT ON SCHOOL FEE INCREASE - David Brown

Students of UNICAL have been greeted with school fee increase instituted by the school management as they resume for the 2015 academic year. This sad welcome was not taken in cheer by the students who had started discussing the issue in small groups around the republic of Malabor. This is a quick reminder of the August 26, 2011 riot incidence which left the school in a consequent 6 months forced break. The SUG executives led by Ajang Emmanuel wasted no time in facing the situation to avert another uprising of any form by the students. This resulted in a meeting with the
school management on Monday 7th April.

Speaking with a source in attendance of the meeting, it was gathered that the school management speaking through the School Bursar Mr. Peter Agi explained that, the N1000 (one thousand naira) increase added to the previous school fee was for medical insurance. When asked why the acceptance fee for freshers was increased from N10, 000 (ten thousand naira) to N15, 000 (fifteen thousand naira), the Bursar explained that the school has been faced with financial challenges in running it’s affairs among which he said the school spends N17, 000, 000 (seventeen million naira) in running the school’s electricity generator every month among other expenditures. He also said the university’s allocation from the Federal Government for Federal Universities has not been paid to the University for some months now, this he said compelled the management to source alternate avenues in generating finances for smooth running.

AFTERMATH OF BUHARI’S VICTORY; ASUU UNICAL HOLDS MEETING - David Brown

The result of the just concluded April 28th Presidential election is already spreading ripples across the country.

Malabor Watch gathered that on Wednesday 8 April, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNICAL Chapter (ASUU – UCC) held a meeting, though other issues discussed at the meeting still remains unclear to our sources, Malabor watch gathered that among the main agenda in the meeting was deliberation on the Change of Government from the steering of President Goodluck Ebele jonathan to that of former General Muhammadu Buhari.

It can be recalled that in 2014, ASUU embarked on a 6 months strike to press home their demands for better funding for Universities and other benefits to University lecturers, this was finally approved by President Jonathan, this has yielded visible benefits and development across the University campus as Faculties, lecture halls and other infrastructures have been undergoing renovations even as new ones are springing up across the campus.

It has been reported that the lecturers are scared that these “goodies” may cease to come when General Muhammadu Buhari mounts the seat as President and reviews these terms. This prompted the need for them to meet and deliberate. We just hope retired General Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t stop the benefits coming to Universities; else, ASUU may welcome him to “reality” with another 6 months strike… if not 12 months
