TENSION GRIPS SUG ASPIRANTS AS CUECO DELAYS SCREENING RESULT

TENSION GRIPS SUG ASPIRANTS AS CUECO DELAYS SCREENING RESULT LIST
The current trend of the SUG election blowing across the University of Calabar community, following series of events such as “consultations”, “disguised campaigns” and lobby for popularity as well as other events arising from motive to win come Wednesday, 6th has been taken to another level since CUECO, the organising body of the SUG elections constituted by the University, flagged-off the official phase of the electioneering process.

Thursday, July 31st 2014 was the day set aside for aspirants to be screened by the organising body – CUECO. It can be said that most, if not all, of the aspirants have developed high-fever as an aftermath of the screening process. This is evident in the visible tension that has gripped aspirants and their supporters, arising from speculations making the rounds in the Republik. Such speculations have it that some aspirants have been disqualified on grounds of lack of eligibility to stand for elections as provided by the University of Calabar SUG Constitution. In a close chat with some Malabites, speculations have it that, some of the Aspirants lack the required CGPA for eligibility to contest for SUG elections, others even went as far as purporting that all the aspirants for the office of the Secretary General were disqualified on grounds of insufficient CGPA for the office. It must be noted at this point that the SUG constitution states in section 48(4b) that “A member shall be disqualified from contesting or holding union office if he aspires to any executive post of the union but has a CGPA of less than 3.5 for the office of the President and Secretary general and 3.0 for other offices and 2.75 for Parliamentarians’’.

Be that as it may, there is hardly a smoke without fire, as the University community awaits the publication of the screened aspirants by CUECO. With this imbroglio, several questions take center stage; could this mean there’s a decline in academic performance among students of the University? Why is there such scarcity in high CGPA among aspirants?   Would this occurrence lead to some aspirants contesting unopposed for certain offices?

What do you have to say about this Development?
Lets hear from you
