ACCOUNTING STUDENTS - NUASA ELECTION ENDS IN A FIASCO.
The
Nigerian Universities Accounting Students Association, (NUASA) University of
Calabar chapter conducted her election yesterday being Friday 8th
August, 2014.
The electoral
body had done all that it needed to do in order to make sure that the election
was a success. Prior to the day of the election, there was campaign and
manifesto which saw all aspirants coming out to tell the students what they
would offer and what they should expect from them if voted into power.
Members of the association were all gathered
at the open pavilion of the university. Some of those who came around during the
conduct of the election to see how the election was going included the SUG
President, Comr. Bassey Eka, The Faculty president, Comr. Eso, John Eso, The
NUASA BoT Chairman and one time SUG Financial Secretary, Comr. Blaise Akpan, the
incumbent Financial Secretary, Comr. Odama Patrick, Some Honourable Members of
the FAMSA Parliament, Members of the Upper legislative body, (SUG SENATE) and a
host of others.
The
Election which started at about 3.00pm with accreditation went on smoothly until
the Faculty Director of Socials, Comr. Onari Onari came to exercise his
franchise as a member of the department.
One of
the agents noticed that the Faculty director Socials dropped more than one
ballot paper and immediately called on the attention of others, they pursued
him, but he ran away and succeeded in creating a rowdy atmosphere and in the
process, another person who came to vote capitalized on the rowdy atmosphere to
drop a bunch of ballot papers into the ballot box and disappeared but this was
also detected by another Agent.
Immediately,
members of the department knew that there was a fowl play somewhere, a
calculated attempt to rig the election in favour of a presidential candidate. They
called for cancellation of the election immediately.
The BoT
Chairman addressed members of the department and told them that it was too bad
to find such a thing happening in a departmental election. He said that those
involved will be brought to book and thorough investigation will be made to
reveal who the attempted rigging was to favour and such a candidate shall stand
automatically disqualified.
Investigations
by malaborwatch shows that some students were happy that the election had been
canceled, some others were of the opinion that the departmental election should
not be conducted again.
Some others
said Okey is okey but it shouldn’t be by
rigging.
This is probably
because it is perceived that one of the candidate has the backing and support
of staffs of the department.
A member of the department who did not want
his name in print said that the Staff adviser had told all the aspirants to
come and consult him with a bottle of drink and one thousand naira if not there
would not be either cleared to stand for election or Inaugurated into office
after election. This was also confirmed by one of the aspirant.
In another
interview, A member of the department who spoke in anonymity said that he did
not like what some graduates who call themselves BoT are handling the issue,
they are protecting the interest of the akwa-ibomites and this was bad.
Anybody who
has graduated should leave the department for legitimate students to handle. He
also said that the so called BoT were estorting money from the aspirants as all
the aspirants were told to come and consult the BoT with two thousand Naira and
a bottle of Wine.
For now, The election has been cancled and a
new date has not been fixed.
